She is loved by Dan Maguire, driver of the laundry wagon, but he is very fond of red, which causes Sally much grief as she thinks a lot of Dan. One day she does up a bundle of shirts in which the color purple predominates. She writes a message on one of the cuffs, calling the owner her "soul mate."
